It can be lonely on-line but given the viral nature of facebook… it doesn’t take long to get in to the swing of things and pick up some friends…
Once you get beyond a certain barrier you will see this pick up exponentially… like a snowball… gathering everything around it and growing bigger much faster… Don’t try too hard or get obsessed – just think about it as a trip to your local wine bar or pub and you will find it is much easier. Let the conversation flow naturally and interject as you would in a real world conversation.
It is much easier to start in places you are comfortable so on your own doorstep is a good place and you will easily find people who can help you and join in on your conversations as they would in the local shop or the street.
Start doing a facebook search for things in your area… so in Enfield I would find… the following…
TIP… click pick section, places, people, groups or pages….
We’ll start with people… by clicking people and adding Enfield the clicking on the filter (highlighted) I get everyone in the area…. as below
TIP: Choose those you do already have connections too… makes people much more likely to say yes to you. If it looks like a business and says add as friend – they are using the wrong account… don’t bother connecting… but you could send them a polite message mentioning they may want to swap to a page.
TIP: It may also help to send a message to them too…
… and don’t forget to add them in to a list to make it easier to control them…
Next search for facebook pages or groups and go and like or join them….
Then…. post something and say “Hello”… you may even mention fanpage or other places too but don’t be spammy…
Not only will the people connected to the page see what you have done but, their friends may too and will come and find you rather than vice versa… go on have a go and see what happens…
Once you have done all your local ones…. try things you have an interest in hobbies etc… and you will soon see the friends start stacking up… don’t forget you have a max of 5,000 which includes your friends and pages you have liked (but it is unlimited on your fanpages so some people may be better off there…).
Hope this gets you started…
