I used to scan the websites of the papers I wanted to follow, but I agree, now that I am enmeshed in twitter I just wait for twitter to lead me to stories I want to follow up in greater depth. It's like the kindle/printed book debate. Somehow I find it hard to believe that electronic means of delivery will ever replace the printed word but they are certainly taking a larger and larger proportion.
