It’s amazing that twitter almost went in to meltdown last night as the sad news of Whitney Houston’s demise leaked from her Hollywood Hotel. Hashtags like #Whitney and #DearWhitney started flooding the site within the hour of her passing. Today’s UK newspapers almost didn’t have a look in as every fact or whisper was repeated [...]

You know your blog has made it when you have to schedule spam removal! #blogging

It is very annoying being notified that someone has commented on your blog, only to find it is from someone selling something very random… suits, websites, all manner of odd things really… but what I don’t get is how they think it will help them…
Yes back links are very useful, but only when linked to relevant pages… and does it look like I sell suits or left handed products…? I am really not going to allow that kind of comment from a completely random site to even hit my pages… and most people have a basic spam filter don’t they? If you don’t you should. Think of it as your shop window.. do you want graffiti all over it? Of course you don’t…
So when wordpress emails you to say there are comments on your blog either take a quick look and approve, disapprove or spam filter them on the email or click in to your site and dust some cobwebs off.
Whilst you are there why not check out your theme and give it a summer dusting too… there are loads of really hot themes out there that make your site shine or why not see if there are any cool plugins to enhance your wordpress experience.
Now if you haven’t added a spam filter you should, the most used one is probably Akismet and it is free for personal use or a sliding scale for business use.. you decide what to pay via paypal.
As creatures of habit it is easy for us to slip in to both good and bad ones… so why not make a regular slot for checking your wordpress blog is clean and spam free? It is a simple and almost painless process if done regularly…. actually why not also do a search for similar sites and comment on some of the content so that there are backlinks to your stuff… if they have added the comment luv plugin it will find one of your posts and add a link under your words of wisdom… but don’t go spamming the world and leave random messages about completely unrelated stuff on other people’s blogs… it’s just not cricket… and if you are removing a lot of spam comments… it means your site is being seen, so is it the end of the world to ensure it is shipshape and spam free?
